Jing-Mei Woo would be a Chinese woman with a confident air around her, not arrogant,but with humility. Then using a camera to follow Jing-Mei almost as if in a first person perspective, it would be easier to separate the half-sisters from the crowd of people and illustrate the connection between them. This dramatic overcast would allow the lighting to be focused more on the half-sisters that Jing-Mei has to meet. To show the many emotions and revelations that go on throughout the scene, music that creates a nervous atmosphere should be played quietly through the background for the beginning of this scene. With this aspect as a guideline, it is important that the characters do not have many lines, and use acting instead of words to present the emotions. The focus of this scene is that emotions can be expressed even beyond language barriers that had separated the mothers and the daughters throughout the story. The switch of calling them half-sisters to sister really displays the closeness that Jing-Mei recognizes exist between them. For it is not to meet some strangers and share a sad story, but unite with them through the tale of their mother. During this scene, she finally understands the purpose of her journey. Before Jing-Mei meet her half sisters, she considers them only as distant relatives, people that she must meet because she has a mission to complete. Throughout this entire scene, the emotions that Jing-Mei expresses come directly from the understanding that she finally reaches with her half sisters. My sister and I watch quietly together, eager to see what develops. The flash of the Polaroid goes off and my father hands me the snapshot. My sisters and I stand, arms around each other, laughing and wiping the tears from each other’s eyes.

After all these years, it can finally be let go. And now I also see what part of me is Chinese. I look at their faces again and I see no trace of my mother in them.

The last scene where Jing-Mei unites with her half sisters The music should be soft enough so that the emotions can be discovered by the audiance themselves. The music of the scene would begin with the end of the Moon Lady’s tale, and then continue to the scene of Ying-ying’s revelation. As the story scene progresses, the lost of hope would become evident in Ying-ying’s face, and she must show an understanding of her situation. The Moon Lady should be at a higher elevated stage, with extensive makeup that changes with each different emotion of the scene. As a lost child, Ying-ying should be standing alone in the crowds of families, but with expressions of joy and hope. The combination of lights would create the composition and setting for the characters. The high camera angle would be a good way to capture Ying-ying to isolate her from the world while making her seems small and fragile. Capturing with a lower camera angle to portray the Moon Lady would provide her with a strong image, and with the spot light on her, the white dress would seem eerie and mysterious.

Using a side light, the shadows would be the key to this scene, as it could be used to create the ambivalent mood that is necessary for the sense of lost. To achieve this atmosphere, the scene must be done with dramatic lighting effects that give the feeling of loneliness to the child and the Moon Lady, as well as block out the background to isolate them from the world to present the connection that exist between them.

This scene must be done carefully, and at that “one small moment”, where the manifestation of this grief comes pouring out. Even though I did not understand her entire story, I understood her grief. The scene between the Moon Lady and Ying-yingĪt the end of her singing tale, I was crying, shaking with despair.
